Fashion Challenge Day One: Your Closet

So I'm taking up this 30-Day-Fashion-Challenge that has been floating around Tumblr. Today is day one, which means I get to share with you my closet. More after the jump.

Geoff and I live in a rather small one bedroom apartment. We have small closets. Him and I are currently splitting a sliding-door closet. It's not much room, I promise you this. As you can see, my clothing is organized ROYGBIV, Blacks, Whites, and then neutrals. I'm slightly OCD about this. Since I lack room, I have to double up tanks with blazers etc, etc. It's really not so bad considering that I have a photographic memory and can tell you what shirt is paired with what jacket (or the likes).

Look how many denim shirts/vests I have, oh my...

Beneath the hanging clothes I keep a huge Rubbermaid bin that keeps all of my craft show gear. It's neutral but takes up a lot of space. On top of that I have a smaller Rubbermaid bin for socks, a weekender bag, and a larger bag that I keep clothes in that need altering. On the top shelf of the closet I keep my Fred Perry bags, some winter boots in their boxes, and kitty's carrier (which is not very fashionable).

On the other side of the room I have a short storage cabinet and a shoe organizer. I can't wait to get a new place so that these can live inside a closet and not just in our room. But at least the cabinet has doors and everything is basic white so that it's not terribly intrusive.

You may be wondering why I don't just get a dresser. Well, I had one from Ikea (the Malm dresser in white to be exact), but it was made so poorly that after only two years it was basically unuseable. I suppose that if I hadn't moved around so much in those two years that it would have lasted me longer, but I didn't want to drive all the way to Cincinati just to spend another $100 on something that may not last. For a while Target was offering something very similar to the Malm series, but since we are wanting to move to Chicago, I didn't want to spend money on large furniture that we would just have to move later.

In comes the cabinets. That's where I house my skirts, pants, shorts, and t-shirts that aren't hang-able. On the top shelf I keep three open Rubbermaids for my unmentionables. I'm usually pretty OCD about this as well. To the side of the cabinet is my shoe organizer. It's also not the best looking thing, but it works for now. I try to keep my shoes organized by color. I also keep more boots under my sewing machine desk and all of my Vans Authentics/Vaults/LoPros in a shoe organizer that hangs on the door.

Do you live in a small apartment? How do you deal with your small space? I'm always up to hear new ideas!
