Review // Julep August Beauty Trailblazers Box + Promo Code

This month, I went a totally different direction with my Julep Maven box. I have a ton of great polish from them, but I wasn't feeling this month's colors. However, the Beauty Trailblazers box— a cleanser, a primer, and a polish — caught my eye and I decided to give it a shot.

Here's what came in this month's Beauty Trailblazers box:

Julep Nail Polish in Queen Anne
Julep Blank Canvas Mattifying Face Primer
Julep Bare Face Cleansing Oil

We'll start with the polish. This is a described as a lilac confetti micro glitter. However, I would say it's more of a mauve. It claims to make your nails stronger, which I am not even willing to try since I can't get past the rough texture and color (my color preference is subjective, of course, and I'm not really a fan of this type of glitter polish). It does meet its claims of being fast-drying. And to get the swatch above, it only took three coats for a solid glitter look.

I was really excited to try the face primer. I'm nearly out of my Urban Decay primer and thought this was a perfect opportunity to try something new and possibly find a replacement product. The Julep Blank Cavas Mattifying Face Primer does not do a good job of hiding pores — which is the reason I use a primer in the first place. The texture is just okay and the smell reminds me of a tattoo shop. As for it's mattifying powers, I wasn't impressed. It was sort of like just putting a thick lotion on my face. I wore it all weekend while at Lollapalooza and it held up fine, but the lack of pore-coverage is going to force me back to Urban Decay.

I was most excited to try this cleansing oil. As I've mentioned in the past, my eyeliner is tough to get off. This cleanser does a damn good job of getting it off. However, even after my makeup is gone, it doesn't leave my skin feeling clean and I end up washing my face again with a Dew Puff. Oh and this oil smells like orange kitchen cleaner. Verdict: great at removing tough makeup, but keep a backup form of face wash to feel super fresh. At $28 a bottle, though, I couldn't see myself buying this again in the future.

Overall, I am neither disappointed nor impressed with this box. As an "extra," they included a stick-on iPhone screen cleaner with the giant Julep logo, which ended up straight in the trash anyway. Per usual, the packaging and shipping time was great, but otherwise it's very middle of the road. The Bare Face Cleansing oil is great for taking off my eyeliner, but I'm not feeling the love on the polish nor the primer. What were your thoughts on your August box?
