As many of you know, I started tattooing eyebrows at the beginning of this year using a method referred to as microblading. The kind of "semi-permanent" tattoo (more information on that phrasing below!) has grown in popularity over the past couple of years and is a great way to enhance or create your perfect eyebrows. Finally, after months of working with the mosts wonderful clients, I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about microblading and my services at Micro Penny Cosmetic Tattoo here on my blog. Feel free to read through and let me know in the comments if you have any questions! Additionally, at the end of this post I will let you know how you can book in Chicago and some upcoming travel plans in the midwest incase you're interested!

First things first: What is microblading? Microblading is a tattoo. Yes. Most of you are aware that I have worked in the tattoo industry and have managed a tattoo shop — I feel fully confident in addressing the concerns that people have about tattooing on their faces. While traditional tattoos in America are normally done with machines, microblading is typically done using a hand tool. This means we can achieve lighter strokes, referred to as "hairstrokes", as well as implanting the pigment shallower in the skin.
Why do people call it semi-permanent? Cosmetic tattooing tends to fade quicker than normal tattooing. Everyone's body is different and most people get their eyebrows touched up every 1-2 years. The pigments used are iron oxide based (as opposed to traditional tattoos using a carbon-based ink), therefore you will find that if you have an iron deficiency, are a smoker, or extended sun exposure, your body may break down the pigment faster. Choosing an artist with a reputable and skilled portfolio is key. Some people's brow strokes fade away almost completely, while others leave lasting marks.

What are some things that may prevent you from getting microblading? It's important to note that individuals with oily skin may experience softer-looking brows. During the healing process, those hairstrokes will turn out more of a powdery look rather than a crisp clean line. This in itself doesn't prevent oily-skinned clients from getting microblading, instead it's just important to set up proper expectations. You will want to avoid cosmetic tattooing if you are pregnant, are on Accutane, have had a sunburn in the past month, are currently or recently have gone through chemotherapy, or are prone to keloids. Other concerns may be potential clients with rosacea or those on blood thinners or other medications. Any health concerns and medicines should be cleared with your doctor. If you have had Botox recently, give it a few weeks to settle before having your eyebrows done to allow time for changed in your appearance to settle. You don't want to end up with uneven eyebrows due to your Botox not being settled!

Does it hurt? Pain tolerance varies person to person. Artists use varying methods, but I have found that most use a topical anesthetic of some kind. Personally, I use two for my clients. While you won't be entirely numb, it does take the edge off and be tolerable. (I've have mine done this way and personally found it to be much easier than getting a regular tattoo!)

How about color range? Just light traditional tattooing, cosmetic tattooing has a wide range of pigment colors to match and compliment your natural hair and skin tone.
I love my job. I can't say it enough times! I really work with the best people and am so humbled and grateful to be trusted with this work. Thank you so much to everyone who has come to see me and for everyone's support! I am no longer working at the tattoo shop, but am tattooing out of a private studio in Roscoe Village.
